I never knew that there was such diversity within the Catholic Church. I always thought there was uniformity in theology and practice amongst all Catholics. Hearing about the Catholic charismatic renewal was surprising because I just never knew there was such thing as a charismatic Catholic. Maybe it’s because I just thought the Catholic tradition was rigid, dogmatic, and traditional. As a result, hearing about how these movements birthed across history was refreshing to hear. It was especially refreshing to hear that this movement helped Catholics to seek a more personal relationship with Christ. I always had the notion that Catholics were unable to have a direct one on one relationship with God, probably because they always had to go through some other medium first to approach God (patron saints, priest, etc.).
